What Is A PhD Dissertation?
As opposed to traditional academic papers, a PhD is an intellectual argument of sorts that you will present to earn your doctorate degree. The dissertation can be on a number of different ideals but must be approved by the review committee prior to commencement. It can take you a year to complete a proper PhD dissertation.
Your PhD dissertation requires that you present a position on a matter relating to your area of study. It will require that you research your topic broadly. Quantitative research methods are previously published letters, books and other literature on the subject that supports your view presented in your dissertation. This research can also include surveys made by yourself or other people. Types of surveys include those that are both internationally recognized as well as your own efforts. Your research should be a mixture of several different media and not wholly reliant on one. With a PhD dissertation, you can include more of your own personal studies into the tome, as opposed to the thesis which is more reliant on works published by others.
Citing works by others must take place throughout the document and any works used must be listed in the bibliography. Consider your PhD dissertation a book. It should be written like a book and researched as you will most likely hope to see it published by the university at which you are enrolled in the doctorate program.
You will most likely work on your PhD dissertation for the entire year that you are studying for your doctorate. Most doctorate programs require you to live off campus while you are a candidate for your PhD. After you have completed the dissertation, you will have to sit before the review board of the program in which you are enrolled and give an oral presentation of your dissertation, at which time you will be asked questions and have to defend your position that is given in the document. After this event, you will most likely be awarded your PhD.
A PhD is as high as you can go in academia. This is the pinnacle of learning. The main difference between a Master’s Degree thesis and the PhD dissertation is how it is viewed by the review board. With the Master’s Degree, there is always a chance for further knowledge and learning. Some people who complete their Master’s Degree then enroll in a doctorate program. With the PhD, there is no further education available.
Earning a PhD usually takes a year after you have earned your Master’s Degree or three years after you have earned a bachelor’s degree. While some programs will accept a candidate for a PhD without having first obtained a Master’s Degree, others will require that candidates first obtain a Master’s Degree before enrolling in a doctorate program.
